Sandford-on-Thames: St Andrew

Church Road Sandford on Thames Oxford
(01865) 748848
http://www.sandfordchurch.org.uk

The old Norman church of St Andrew c.1100 was extensively rebuilt in 1840, retaining its Norman character and medieval carving but reflecting the tractarian flavour of its then priest, F.W.Faber. It remains a typical Anglican village parish church, at the heart of the village, with a friendly and welcoming congregation and an excellent choir. The porch was added in 1652 and in the still open graveyard stands a fine yew tree, planted on Good Friday 1800. To the east of the porch is a flat topped gravestone from which bread was given to the poor of the parish. The visits of Lewis Carroll to preach in Sandford in the 1860s are still commemorated in a local custom on Whitsunday, and the July Flower Festival is a highlight of the Sandford year (2nd Saturday in July).
